NPS Scotland held their AGM and 2025 Prize giving on Sunday 8th February at Blair Drummond Hall, Stirling. We had a pleasing turn out of members and friends who had travelled from Inverness to Dumfries to attend and enjoy a chat and get together over lunch after the meeting and prize giving.
DWH Dick (Transy Stud) Commemorative Trophy
The DWH Dick Trophy presented in memory of the late Dougal Dick of Transy Stud to recognise exceptional breeding or performance was presented to Alistair Smith of the Bracklinn Stud by Sarah Ross (nee Dick).
The Smith Family’s Bracklinn Fell ponies have had a tremendous success both in hand and under saddle throughout the UK, often featuring at the major breed shows and national competitions. This year they had an exceptional run as they took supreme In Hand at our NPS Scotland Championships and reserve Overall Supreme of show at Scone Palace 2025, promptly followed by supreme champion at the Fell Pony Society breed show 2025 and Supreme Champion to finish the season at the NPS Scotland In Hand show.
Treasure Island Points Trophy
Julie Smith collected the Treasure Island M & M Showing Trophy on behalf of Holly Smith with Kincardine Uist. This combination had a fabulous showing season and were worthy winners of this competition.
Fiona Stewart won the Ridden Part Bred for the second year with her home bred Aytonhill Cosette.
Blackrock Oscar ridden by Shona Wildgoose, won the best Welsh D and overall Dressage trophy.
Please see full results of NPS Scotland POINTS competition in attached file.

Bill has been the one and only sponsor of the Kilmannan Stud Novice Ridden Championships for NPS Scotlans since it was introduced in the erly 1990's. He served on our committee from it;s inception for many years and was always there at ringside giving encouragement and support at our shows until his illness prevented him from attending. Bill will be very sorely missed by us all.

SATURDAY 14th June 2025 - Summer Show 2025
We were very lucky that the NPS Scotland 2025 show could go ahead as the forecast was wet with thunder and lightning. We did get showers but not too heavy and there were some dry spells so it was much better than expected. The ground held up well, and those who came enjoyed the day. 2014 was our last wet show so we’ve done not too badly over the years for wet days!

The Treasure Island Trophy for the most points within Mountain and Moorland Ridden showing was won by Jessica Whiteford with Lynmore Glen, who was also the Best Shetland in the competition.

The Ridden Part Bred prize went to Lesley McNaughton- Wells with Roandale Saxon, the In Hand Mountain & Moorland to Emma-Jane Murray with Ochills Enchanted, and the In Hand Part Bred to Eleanor Crate with Bansky Royal Approval.

All prize winners received wonderful gifts and vouchers from our sponsor of this competition TICK TACK, and we are very grateful to Karen Laver for this much appreciated sponsorship.

This is a great competition that is open to members and non-members to recognise the versatility of the native breeds and we hopefully look forward to lots of entries for 2023.

What a brilliant event NPS Scotland held on Sunday 26th September 2021 at SNEC, Oatridge College, Broxburn to celebrate 60 years of the National Pony Society in Scotland. We couldn’t have put on a more modern, practical, entertaining, and very educational day for all who attended. It was a showcase of professionalism and vision, that was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who attended.

Erik and Russell Mackechnie-Guire gave the most outstanding presentations and both did a fabulous job in turning the whole timetable of the day into practical scenarios, which was then supported by scientific evidence. No stone was left unturned. Tom Best was our excellent MC for the day who opened the day with a brief history of the NPS in Scotland, then kept the day running to time.

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported this event to celebrate the 60 years of the NPS in Scotland. A huge thank you to all the pony providers and helpers on the day and our very grateful thanks to the National Pony Society and the RHASS for their support of the event.

Our Breed Discussion Series has proven to be a great success and we have enjoyed 5 weeks of excellent talks by Jo Jack, Richard Telford, David Blair, Pat Rennie and Jane Somerset on their relevant breeds. Each evening brings a new perspective and I think we have all learned so much and certainly enjoyed the presentations. We are so grateful to all our presenters for taking the time to share their knowledge and experience with us.

Please click here for the remaining evenings available.

Firstly, we would like to thank everyone for your patience
in these difficult times. Following the
Scottish Government announcements last week, the NPS Scotland Committee have met
and discussed our plans for 2021, taking into consideration the restrictions
currently in place and the hope that they are eased towards the end of
April. Sadly, our Spring Show scheduled for 24th and 25th
April at SNEC cannot go ahead, but we do have alternative plans and outline
them below.

Dressage Day – Saturday 22nd May at
Champfleurie Equestrian, Linlithgow.

This season opener is the ideal way to ease everyone back
into competition. There will be classes for Intro, Prelim, Novice,
Elementary and possibly Medium (timetable TBC). We hope that you will be
able to come, and our aim is to give you at least two classes to do on the
day. Everyone welcome and it would be great to see you.

Spring Show – Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th
June at Strathallan Castle, Auchterarder.

As this Show cannot be held in April, we are moving it to
our traditional June Summer Show date. We will be hosting one of the last
NPS RIHS M&M WHP Qualifiers on Saturday, 12th June. This
is great news that we have been allowed to transfer this qualifier from our April
date and that it is not lost to Scotland. The Show will follow the usual
Spring Show timetable and have all the NPS Summer Championship Qualifiers.

We are aware that BSPS Scotland are also holding a Show over
this same weekend as traditionally we usually run on the Saturday and they run
on the Sunday. However, as mentioned we will be WHP on the Saturday and
Flat/IH classes on the Sunday and they will be running vice versa.

Summer Show – Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th
July at SNEC, Oatridge College.

For 2021 only, we are moving our Summer Show to July and
will again be following the Spring Show timetable with WHP on the Saturday and
the flat and in hand classes on the Sunday.

NPS Scotland/Blair Castle Horse Trials Open Show –
Friday, 28th August

With so many Shows cancelled for 2021 and therefore no
qualifying rounds held, we have had to cancel our usual Championships this
year. However, we will run an Open Show for all our members to enter and
the timetable will be similar to that of our Championships.

We will keep you all updated with further details, advise
you when schedules are available and give you the relevant Covid information in
due course.

With our best wishes to everyone, stay healthy and roll-on
competition and events in 2021.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone.

We have a duty of care to all our members, exhibitors, judges, officials, volunteers and committee and feel that in the current circumstances it wouldn’t be correct or responsible for us to proceed with the event at this particular time. We will review our other events shortly and revert back to you with decisions relating to them.

If you have any queries, please contact the NPS Scotland Secretary or myself and take care in these very difficult times.

Receiving the training bursary has been an amazing opportunity for Rohan and I. With the training bursary we have been travelling down to Perth for lessons with Kirsty Aird. During the lessons we have worked on improving Rohan’s paces and way of going for the showing world and started some jumping. These lessons have really given us the kick start we needed to improve our jumping.

I plan to carry on these lessons with Kirsty as she has been a massive help. With the help from Kirsty, Rohan and I have had some amazing results this year including being placed 9th at Blair Horse Trials in the NPS Novice Ridden M&M and being 1st on the MyQuest leaderboard for the U21 Prelim section in Scotland.

We can confirm that we have been awarded the NPS/NAF M & M (RIHS) WHP Qualifier for 2020.

We are introducing a Mixed Height Open M & M WHP class for 2020.

Sunday 26th April 2020

We have recently been notified by the BSPS that we have not been awarded the Heritage Open Ridden and Lead Rein/First Ridden (RIHS) qualifiers for 2020 Spring Show. The reason given by the BSPS is that they have been instructed by the RIHS to reduce the amount of qualifiers. We have appealed against this decision but regrettably without success.

We will fill these classes with alternative ridden qualifiers which we will notify you of at the earliest.

Remembering Dougal WH Dick 1934-2019

It is difficult to relate the story of Dougal's life without also referring his family's Transy Pony Stud, which was founded in 1896 by his grandfather, William Mungall, on the purchase of two unregistered Shetland pony geldings for his Transy Estate on the outskirts of Dunfermline, Fife. His purchase would soon become a passion for the breed and four generations on it remains strong through his daughter Eleanor and her husband William Dick, grandson Dougal and great-grandchildren Carolyn and Sarah, who became partners with Dougal in 1988. Dougal's hope that another generation will be added to the list in due course seems assured as his own grandchildren have already shown an interest in the Stud.

At a time when breed societies and stud books were developing rapidly, his family played a prominent role for over a century, all having been elected to Council of the Shetland Pony Stud Book Society with Presidency awarded to William Mungall in 1909, to William Dick (Dougal's father) in 1959 and to Dougal himself from 1969 to 1971 and again from 1999 to 2000. Dougal has been a member of the Shetland Pony International Show and Centenary Show Committees as well as the Centenary Trust. The Shetland Pony Stud Book Society was not the only pony society to benefit from Dougal's leadership as he was also Scottish Chairman National Pony Society (1975-2000), National Pony Society Council member and President (1989-90), founder member Scottish Equine Breeders Association and Chairman (1999-2003) and Chairman of the Scottish Connemara Group.

Dougal took over the breeding of ponies at Transy in 1953 having persuaded his parents to bring back to the Stud six of the remaining mares which had been out on loan to the Harviestoun and Marshwood Studs during the war when the Dick's farm at Lochend had been requisitioned as a remount depot for the army. It was at much the same time that Dougal was actively engaged in sporting activities including sailing and cricket however it was both hockey and curling at which he excelled and played competitively for local clubs. It was later in life that he pursued the more leisurely hobby of photography, something which he had inherited from both father and grandfather who were both keen amateur photographers in their day.

Following his father's advice to dismiss options for Oxford or Cambridge, Dougal studied agriculture at the East and West Colleges of Agriculture choosing to return home to run the farms on Transy Estate. Although better known as a Shetland pony breeder, he maintained his interest in farming and having sold his farms at Lochend and Dunnygask near Dunfermline, he moved to Devonshaw in Clackmannanshire in 1969 where sheep became the focus along with cattle and ponies. His interest in agriculture never faded and Dougal always had a view on how Scottish farm land should be managed. His ties with the Transy Estate came to an end in 1989 when it was sold following the death of his mother.

Dougal saw the Transy Stud through its centenary year when he hosted a memorable gathering at Devonshaw in 1996 and the publication of its history which he painstakingly compiled with words and photographs from his extensive library. Bloodlines from the early purchases by William Mungall in 1899 had been proudly maintained and still remain in the pedigree of ponies currently in the Stud. From Mungall's early domination of the Royal Highland Show championships in the first part of the 20th century, Dougal won his first prize at Perth Show in 1939 when he won with the barren mare Skelmore of Transy. He has since upheld a keen interest in shows and has successfully competed throughout Britain and Europe. Among his many big wins, the Highland Show Championship and Medal won in 2002 with Ceres of Transy was considered by Dougal as his greatest accomplishment in the show ring as it followed a lengthy gap since the Stud had taken the title and his very own first at Scotland's premier event.

Much success has since followed and in 2010 the Royal Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland recognised his outstanding contribution to livestock breeding by awarding him the prestigious Sir William Young Award. It is no wonder as he also exported ponies to all corners of the world including Continental Europe as well as both North and South America, Egypt and Japan making the Transy prefix a key constituent of Shetland pony breeding policies universal.

While latterly Dougal's interests have mainly rested with the showing of his Shetlands in breed classes, over the years he has been a great supporter of all performance aspects of the breed with successes recorded with ponies both under saddle and in harness. This probably explains why in discussion with Dougal on the merits or demerits of conformation, hind legs, active action behind and good movement have always featured as a priority with him. In time he was invited to join the Shetland Pony panel of judges in 1959 and judged his first show at Echt that year. Following his first major judging appointment in 1967 when he judged the Royal Show, he went on to judge every major show in the country as well as extensively overseas. In addition to the Shetland panel he has also been a panel judge for the British Driving Society, the British Connemara Society and the National Pony Society for which he was an authority on all native breeds. It is a little known fact that Dougal also bred a few Dartmoor and Connemara ponies at Transy, two breeds which he had previously selected for his children to ride as they outgrew their Shetlands. Even less known is the fact that he also stood a Thoroughbred stallion for many years which was popular with breeders in Central Scotland.

It goes without saying that Dougal's dedication to public duty knew no bounds. He was one of the willing volunteers of life, generous of his time, his knowledge, his experience and his enthusiasm; he was also a very generous sponsor from which many good causes benefited. He will be remembered as a wonderful host to the many hundreds, if not thousands, of people who enjoyed his hospitality at Devonshaw. Dougal's passion for the Shetland breed and ponies in general never faltered and until very recently his lack of mobility never stopped him from attending shows and events.

While I am sure Dougal's recognition as a successful breeder and exhibitor are well earned, these go nothing towards describing the man known affectionately so many people both in his locality and world-wide. He would have been the first to recognise the life-long friendships which he established through the Shetland breed or horses and ponies in general. While Dougal didn't suffer fools gladly; his likable character, interesting conversation, good nature and wicked sense of humour made him easy and enjoyable company, something which he generously shared.

Dougal was a great family man having married Katherine in 1963; although divorced they remained friends to the end. He was immensely proud of their daughters Carolyn and Sarah and encouraged their interest in competitive riding as well as breeding and showing Transy ponies. Their respective husbands James and Ian have become backroom boys at Transy and their children Charlotte, Matthew, Sophie and Lucy have begun to play a key role. Sincere condolences are extended to them all.

2019 NPS Scotland Bursary Winner 10 – 17 years – Keiva Robertson

A report from Keiva on how she has used the bursary…

Thank you very much for the training grant you awarded me for the season of 2019.

This training grant has helped me and Tiffany progress and learn new skills to get ready for the busy show season.

I had lessons with Vicky Common and Ashley Rilley in Inverness, with Vicky I did jumping and cross country getting us ready for the Highland show and with Ashley we focused on flat work and getting ready for the HOYS which we had qualified for the junior small breeds ridden.

We had a massive journey ahead of us to get to Birmingham with a few weather delays on the way with the Ferry!

My time at HOYS was magical, an experience I will never forget. We arrived on Friday and I didn't ride Tiffany on Friday because we had travelled so far, but I rode her on Saturday in the outdoor arena at the stables.

I went to bed early that night as I had to get up so early to be up at the Top Spec Arena for our familiarisation at 6:00am, where we got to ride around the TopSpec Arena before the classes started in the morning, Tiffany was a doll as always, she was foot perfect.

Our class was in the afternoon, Tiffany was brilliant and ready for the occasion, we loved every second of it, we got to show off in 'The Ring' at HOYS. I want to thank each person who helped me reach my dream, I’m so grateful! Dreams really do come true!

Thank you once again

Members and friends travelled from the north and the south to this very central venue. There was wonderful imagination, high skills, strong competition and a lot of laughs along the way. The men only class topped the class entries with 9 entries of shortbread and there were carrot cakes of all shapes, designs and sizes making it a tough decision for out two wonderful judges Ann Whitelaw who has provided the NPS Summer show lunch for over 20 years and Graham Barclay, master baker and more know to most of us as the working hunter course builder.
The photograph class brought an amazing range of entries, but first prize went to a spectacular shot of two of Dougal Dicks Shetland ponies out on the hill.
Thank you to everyone who attended and supported this event which was run as a fund raiser for the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance and raised GBP401.50 which NPS Scotland are rounding up to a GBP500 donation.

Sat 19th October 2019 at Netherton Equestrian, Aberargie, Perth PH2 9NE

Many of you may be aware that there was a large fire at Netherton Equestrian at the weekend. Thankfully all horses and humans were unhurt but both indoor arena's are badly damaged.

We have considered our options for this show, but regrettably we are having to cancel this show for 2019.

Entries will be refunded in the next few days.

We wish all at Netherton a speedy return to normal following this horrific fire, a horrible event for all concerned but thankfully no one and no animals hurt.

Kind regards

2018 was an amazing year for Glenmore of Roisbheinn (AKA Grom) and Susan Chappelhow –Lacey. The partnership of four years has gone from strength to strength. Initially competing in flat classes and consistently being placed in the top 10; the pair progressed to Working Hunter Classes and eventually to Eventing. Jumping is their passion

Competing in over 15 BE90 events in 2018 and accruing 51 Foundation points, they have qualified for both Badminton and Blair Horse Trials in 2019. Grom is believed to be the first pure bred Highland Pony to compete at this level. Earning their place at the Arena Eventing Championships at Blenheim Palace the pair finished in third place. Clear but rather too quick. At flint & Denbigh Show in August they won their ticket to HOYS to compete in the under 143cms workers. Unfortunately taking a pole out with his tail they dropped from 3rd to 11th place.

In just two outings to British Dressage affiliated events they qualified for the Native Dressage Championships at Novice & Elementary level. A none horse related injury stopped Susie making the trip to Vale View.

This truly remarkable combination has gone a long way to prove the versatility of the Highland Pony and we wish them every success in 2019.

NPS Scotland Harbro Point Scheme 2019

As we have just completed our second year of the revised Points Scheme which superseded the traditional Performance Scheme everyone seems to be happy with the new format which now welcomes entries from Ridden and Driving disciplines as well In Hand competitors too.
The objective of this scheme still remains the same as a competition to promote and recognise the versatility of all the native breeds and their part-breds.
Riders/drivers/handlers can be of any age, and members and non-members of NPS Scotland are open to enter. Entry fees are GBP10 for NPS Scotland members and GBP15 for non-members. The competition runs from 1st January to 31st December each year. Entries can be made throughout the year as long as you have kept a log of your results.
Ponies are awarded points which are graded according to the activity which range from attending Pony Club games and rallies to competing at Driving Marathons, Long Distance Rides, Hunter Trials or Horse of the Year Show. There truly is something for everyone in this competition. See Points Scheme 2019 Record Book for details on how points are awarded.

Tom & David’s celebrated “Waxwing Stud” has produced many outstanding Welsh Section A & B ponies in the more than four decades since it was established.
Not only have they enjoyed showing success to the very highest level but as judges, breeders and champions of our native breeds they have won many friends & admirers.

Generous with their time, knowledge and experience, Tom & David could not be more deserving of this prestigious award.

Congratulations to Fiona "Volunteer of the year"

On behalf of the NPS Scotland committee and membership, huge congratulations go to Fiona Roebuck for winning “Volunteer of the year” at the National Equestrian Awards on Friday night (March 1st). Alongside her support for other societies and her new appointment to RHASS, the panel recognised Fiona’s many years of service to the Scottish equestrian community both as a committee member and now leader of NPS Scotland, where she has overseen growth in membership, developed new events and made the “Blair Finals” an outstanding finale to our showing calendar. Well done Fiona!

It is essential that any horses showing signs of possible equine influenza, or horses that might have been in contact with possibly infected horses, do not travel to competitions or other events where there will be groups of horses. If your horse has been in contact with an infected horse we suggest that you should take immediate veterinary advice. The NPS advise shows to carry out spot checks on Influenza Vaccination records and to advise their competitors to have their animal’s passport with them and ensure that their vaccinations are up to date.

Below is everything you need to know about the NPS Spring Show 2019

IMPORTANT! EQUINE INFLUENZA & BIOSECURITY
Following the recent outbreak of equine influenza, equestrian establishments and event venues throughout the U.K have heightened biosecurity procedures and criteria. It is important for NPS Scotland competitors and visitors to understand that each venue can specify its own biosecurity guidelines, so it is up to all of us to ensure that we have read those guidelines for the particular venue we are attending. For the avoidance of doubt, do not assume that rules will be the same across all venues. The Society does not set venue rules and whilst we will endeavour to keep you updated, it is your responsibility to ensure that equine passports and vaccinations are up to date in line with the venue requirements and crucially that you can produce them promptly for checking, if you are asked. With respect to the examination of and ruling on, passport validity, the event vet’s decision shall be final and access denied to invalid passport holders. - For more information click here: Biosecurity_Policy

We are delighted to share a brief report from Shanyn on what she has done with her 2018 bursary.

After purchasing my 3 year old gelding Rivervalley Revolver aka Roger, he went to Kirsty Aird’s in the winter of 2017 for a brief time, during the summer months of last year, Roger and I had lots of fun together, introducing him to big wide world.

As Kirsty knew Roger, I decided use the bursary to further both his and my education. Due to Kirsty’s very busy season, we waited until the winter when Roger would be more mature and stronger within himself.

We had five lessons with Kirsty, we worked on slowing down his walk and trot, taught him to flex his head and neck to improve his suppleness, which helped with his bending and to use his corners and for me to ride better circles. We both learned how to do turn on the forehand and leg yield, boy it was hard work! On to canter, to improve and strengthen his canter, we used canter poles on a circle, this all helped him to keep a rhythm and for me to ride smooth balanced turns, to prepare him for his jumping.

I would like to thank NPS Scotland and of course Kirsty, Roger and I will be continuing our education with her throughout the year, our lessons have been great fun and very hard work.

January Newsletter 2019

Please click on image to read the latest news

Saturday 8th June 2019
Strathallan Castle, Auchterarder PH3 1JZ

The NPS Scotland Committee are delighted to say that, after a three year absence, we are to be returning back to Strathallan Castle for our Summer Show 2019, by very kind permission of Anna Roberts.

We are in the process of completely revamping the schedule, with new classes, a new timetable and a complete refresh of this event.

We very much hope you will put the date in your diary and support this Show. It is one of the most fantastic venues in Scotland and we are all delighted to be returning to what we like to call our ‘home ground’.

On Saturday 27th October we had a great gathering of members, friends and family at Strathallan Castle by very kind permission of Anna Roberts with not a pony in sight unless it was in a picture or on a cake. It was a great opportunity for all there to have a chat and a catch up with a bit of fun, a lot of laughs and a good bit of competition including a highly competitive Men only class. People travelled from Brechin to the Borders to meet our two judges Anne Whitelaw (aka Mary Berry) who provides our renowned Summer Show judges lunch and Graham Barclay, master baker (aka Paul Hollywood) who everyone knows as our working hunter course builder.

There was a tremendous display of baking and crafts in aid of the Grass Sickness Fund and the NPS Scotland Young Judges Scheme. The day raised GBP426.50.

This year we are again offering NPS Scotland polo shirts, zip tops and hoodies which will have the NPS Scotland logo embroidered on the front with the names of all the ponies entered at our 2018 BLAIR FINALS printed on the back (similar to those you can purchase at HOYS, PC Champs, etc). An excellent memento of your NPS Scotland day at Blair.

The hoodies are of excellent quality and we have gone for an upgraded polo shirt this year as shown.

Please make your order as soon as possible. ORDERS WILL CLOSE ON MONDAY 6th AUGUST.

I’m afraid no late orders will be accepted after this date to allow us to have them ready for collection at the Finals.

The committee of NPS Scotland are delighted to announce that 12 year old Shanyn Wilson from Errol, Perthshire has been awarded a GBP150 bursary towards further training.

Shanyn competes her two ponies, Legerview Charlotte (Lottie Section A) and Rivervalley Revolver (Roger Section C). She has brought Lottie on from a complete novice and produces her ponies herself. Shanyn highlights so far with Lottie have been being placed 5th in the M & M First Ridden Championships in 2016. The partnership then went on in 2017 to qualify for the Novice and the Open Ridden Championships as well as the Working Hunter Pony Championships at the NPS Scotland Championships at Blair Castle International Horse Trials. Her new pony is Roger is only 4 years old and she is hoping to bring him on in the same way to compete in ridden and working hunter classes when he is ready.

We wish Shanyn all the best and hope the bursary helps her with further training.

Well done, and good luck

The committee of NPS Scotland are delighted to announce that Leona Jade Clark from Edinburgh has been awarded a GBP150 bursary towards further training.

Leona Jade has been involved with native ponies from an early age either competing, grooming or showing in particular Connemara, Exmoor or Fell ponies. Currently she has a young Connemara gelding who she has backed and is looking at competing in novice ridden level with him this year. In time she aims to do Open Ridden and Working Hunter classes. She is hoping to use the bursary for jumping lessons and to further their education.

Alongside a passion of competing Native Breeds Leona has a love of photographing them. Examples of her work can be found at the following website: www.leonajclark.wixsite.com/lclarkphotography

She is passionate about the promotion of native ponies, championing them for their versatility and range of character, and enjoys show casing this through photography.

We wish Leona Jade all the best and hope the bursary helps her with her further training.

Well done, and good luck.

In the interim and for the avoidance of doubt, a pony can only enter the NPS Scotland novice ridden finals (Blair) ONCE. Thus, for example if you plan to campaign for two seasons at Novice level before progressing to Open, you should not enter the Blair finals in your first season, even if you are lucky enough to be presented with a finals “ticket” at a qualifying show.

Study Day

Open to Panel Judges, Probationer Judges and anyone interested in becoming a Judge

Harbro took over the sponsorship in 2016 of the then Performance Scheme which was then revised to the Points Scheme in 2017. Having just completed the first year of this new competition which seems to be running well and is now starting to roll out to include more new exhibitors from a spread of disciplines NPS Scotland are delighted to see the very wide range of native ponies and part breds who are excelling in performance throughout the country.
The 2017 prize giving at the AGM in February saw all prize winners receive Harbro vouchers along with fabulous rugs, and saddle cloths to the champions and reserves all very kindly sponsored by Harbro. Harbro operates a network of country stores spanning Scotland, supplying both the farming, equestrian and wider rural community with quality products for country life. link to HARBRO On behalf of our winners thank you to Harbro, and we very much look forward to working together for 2018.

Training day with JAMES MUNRO

Saturday 24th March 2018

In the past, NPS Scotland has run a qualifier at our Summer Show. However, with our move to Highfield at Howe in 2016, we don’t have the room to hold this qualifier and Netherton Equestrian, which is situated near to Bridge of Earn in Perthshire, have offered to host qualifying classes in July, September and February. This will give competitors three separate chances to qualify. The July date will be Sunday, 3rd and please watch our website and social media page for confirmation of the September and February dates.

BD tests Prelim 18 and Novice 30 will be used for all qualifiers and each test will consist of the following six sections, all of which will have their own Final:

Registered M&M breeds not exceeding 138cms
	Registered M&M breeds exceeding 138cms
	Registered British Riding Ponies
Part Bred Horses/Ponies registered with their appropriate Native Breed Part Bred Stud Book – including PBA ponies overstamped in the British Riding Pony Stud Book and ponies registered with the British Sports Pony Stud Book.
Highest placed Mini rider aged under 12 years on 1st January 2016
Highest placed Junior rider under 18 years on 1st January 2016

The two highest placed ponies in each section at each qualifying show will qualify for the 2017 Final and also be eligible to be chosen to represent their Breed, NPS Area or other team in the Team Challenge which will be incorporated into the 2017 Championship Final. To compete in the Final, you must be a fully paid up Dressage, Qualifying or Life member of the NPS in 2017.

So, if you are keen to enter – and hopefully you will be – please can you contact Netherton Equestrian direct for more information and a copy of their schedule. Their details are as follows:

Netherton Equestrian (Joanna Wilkie)

Finally, if any of you know of a competition centre or riding club who hold regular dressage competitions and you think would like hold a qualifier, the link to the NPS dressage page is http://www.nationalponysociety.com/images/qualifying_shows/docs/20162017DressageDates.pdf and they will get full details on rules, regulations and affiliation there.
